I have chosen to complete the Magazine and online brief for my NEA coursework unit. The name of my magazine is Harmony, and it will appeal to an audience who are 16-25 years old and are middle to up market style conscious individuals and will predominately be female.
In order to gain an understanding of the traditional codes and conventions in a front cover and contents page of a style magazines I am going to study and refer to lots of real-life examples. To begin this process of making magazine covers and contents pages I need to take high quality photos that could be used in a real-life magazine cover. For my front cover these will be close up facial shots of my models to appeal to the audience as well as the conventions of a magazine. I will not place any of my cover lines on top of the models face in my covers so that it does not draw away from the image itself as well as to follow conventions of a magazine cover. The house style of this magazine will need to appeal to the target audience which I will do through the colour scheme which will be pastel light toned colours, at the moment I am thinking colours such as pinks, blues and yellows. To keep these two issues connected I am going to keep the font types and colour schemes the same to keep them looking as though they belong together. I will also keep the placement of the masthead, dateline and price the same on both covers.
I am going to research into the codes and conventions of a fashion magazine website by finding examples of them and will refer to them when creating my own website. I investigated the Vogue and ELLE magazine websites. The menu will include pages such as home, fashion, beauty, culture, runway and shop. I am going to place my masthead to one side of this menu and put social media links and a subscribe button on the other side of the menu. My homepage and shop will be the two pages that I will design. When the audience opens the website, they will be greeted with the top story which will be rather large as to catch your attention. Then underneath there will be some subcategories such as fashion and beauty that will contain even more stories. These would link to the corresponding pages using a view more button. For a colour scheme I would like to keep it similar to my covers and contents pages to keep them all connected but also keep it a bit more simplistic and not to draw away from the actual stories and items on my website.
In order to make sure that front covers, contents pages and website all link together I am going to keep a fairly similar design on all of them. This will be done with colour scheme and font style. I plan to use a serif font that is fairly bold for my title which will tie all the elements together creating a brand identity. I will also include links to the website to the front covers of my issues to link the physical products to the online ones.
